Mining Magnificent Minds (MMM)

As many of you know, I have been working with children and adults who have ADHD since I was diagnosed with the condition myself back in 1981. Learning about ADHD and bringing what I learn to the general public has been one of my life’s major missions. “I do not treat disabilities; I help people “unwrap their gifts.” With MMM, I want to help teachers do the same.

I am Vienna, Austria, with my wife, Sue. Today we went to Freud’s home at the famous No. 19 Bergasse. After we left, I chatted with Sue about how many qualities Freud had in common with people who have the trait now called ADD or ADHD. Above all, he was fiercely independent and spoke his mind, even if it meant going totally against the grain of common wisdom. His ideas shocked the daylights out of people….and they still do! I think this is why I so admire Freud, even though I disagree with much of what he wrote. The man was a true pioneer, a visionary, a seer, an innovator, and a consummate dreamer. He marched to the beat of his own drum, as most people with ADD do. He loved to travel and did much of his best writing when he was on the move. He also couldn’t write without the stimulation of tobacco or cocaine. When he had to give up tobacco due to cancer, he complained he could no longer write. He was also extremely impatient, and was famous for tapping the couch, commanding his patients to get on with their associations and stop dawdling! Whether we want to say he had the trait we now so misleadingly call ADHD or not doesn’t matter. What matters is how much he had in common with those of us who do.
